There are several reasons why you may not be able to hear the sound from your laptop speakers. For instance, if you’ve been listening to music with the volume turned up for a while, and you haven’t adjusted it again when you switched to watching a video or making a voice call, your speakers may just be too loud. If that doesn’t help, then there could be some issues with your laptop’s audio system. Either there is something wrong with the speakers themselves, or something has gone awry with the software that controls volume. In this article, we give you 5 simple tips and tricks to fix laptop speaker volume.

Check and change default speaker volume

The first thing to check when you can’t hear sound from your laptop speakers is whether the volume is turned up. If it’s set to a really low level, there’s no point trying to fix any other issues — you just need to turn it up. The easiest way to check this on a Windows laptop is to click the speaker icon in the system tray. On a Mac, click the volume icon in the menu bar. The icon should have a number in it to show the current volume level. Make sure the volume level is turned up — if not, click it and increase it. While you’re at it, make sure the volume isn’t muted. You can do that by clicking Mute and then clicking Unmute. If the volume level is correct, and you can’t hear anything, check that there aren’t any headphones plugged in.

Reset Windows Audio Service

If resetting your audio service doesn’t solve the problem, there’s something wrong with the audio drivers on your laptop. The best solution would be to reinstall the audio drivers and then restart your laptop. To do that, open the Device Manager, select the audio device and click ‘Disable’. Next, click ‘Uninstall’ and then ‘OK’ in the ‘Confirm Device Removal’ pop-up box. Now, open the ‘Install Device Software’ tab in the ‘Sound’ window, select ‘Browse’ and browse to the location where you saved your audio drivers. Select the audio drivers and click ‘Next’. Now, click ‘Finish’ and ‘OK’ to restart your laptop.

Check the Speaker Cable

Sometimes, the problem could be as simple as a faulty speaker cable. Make sure that the cable isn’t loose and that it is connected to the right port. There should be a green light on the cable if it’s grounded correctly, and the port on your laptop and the port on your speaker should be either blue or black. If the problem persists, you may need to replace your cable. If you’re using external speakers, make sure they are plugged in to the right port. If you’re using Bluetooth speakers, make sure your laptop and the speaker are paired and that the battery on both devices is not dead.

Adjust Windows Volume Mixer

If everything else fails, or if you simply want to try a different solution, you can adjust the Windows Volume Mixer. Select the Windows icon, select ‘Settings’, go to ‘Devices’ and select ‘Sound’. You can use the slider to adjust the volume for different audio sources, such as Music, Movies and Voice.

Change Speaker Properties

If you’ve tried everything above and you still can’t hear sound, you may have a faulty set of speakers. Fortunately, you can easily change the settings of your laptop speakers. If you’re using Windows 10: Go to the Action Center and select ‘Sound’. Click ‘Playback devices’ and select ‘Change Device’. Select the new speaker and click ‘OK’. If you’re using Windows 8.1: Go to the ‘Control Panel’, ‘Sound’ and ‘Playback devices’. Select ‘Change Device’ and change the speaker.

Laptops are convenient and portable, but the speakers aren’t the best. Luckily, there are easy ways to solve these issues. You can turn up the volume, connect external speakers, or adjust the Windows Volume Mixer to play audio from different sources. While the first two solutions are obvious, the last one is not. If you use Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, you can easily change the default audio device. With these solutions, you can hear sound from your laptop speakers perfectly.
