If you’re looking for a budget and the best laptop for civil engineering students, then you should definitely take a look at this Acer Aspire E15 because it prices cheaper and provides tons of features at just $600. I have talked about this laptop variety of times and that I have no reason not to recommend this superb laptop for a civil engineer.

The Acer Aspire E15 comes with a 15.6 inch full HD IPS display which has good color accuracy and viewing angles. The build quality of the laptop is just good I would say. Better build quality would have been appreciated but still, for a $600 machine, you’re a solid machine.

Currently, Acer is offering this laptop in various configurations. If you wish for the cheapest option, then I’ll suggest you get this one. This model comes with 256GB SSD, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Core i5-8250U Processor, and GeForce MX150 with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM.

As you can see, You’ve almost everything a civil engineer would need in a laptop. From storage to performance, this laptop has a lot to offer at a really cheap price.

If you’re curious about the gaming performance of this machine, then take a look at this laptop.

The MX150 performs reasonably well and considering the worth of this laptop, there’s nothing much to complain about. You should watch this video to know a lot about the gaming performance of this laptop.

Acer also has offered a good number of ports on this machine. The laptop offers two more special features i.e an optical drive and a backlit keyboard. You’ll notice many laptops with backlit keyboards these days but it’s pretty rare to see a laptop with an optical drive which might be handy sometimes.

When it comes to portability, the Acer Aspire E 15 weighs 5.3 lbs (2.4 kg) which might not be light-weight for many people. Hence, a bag to hold the laptop would be very helpful.

And lastly, the battery life.

Overall, this is a damn good laptop for civil engineering students out there.

Note: If you wish for more laptops in the price category, then you should take a look at my post where I have shared the best cheap gaming laptops for under 500 dollars.

8. Lenovo Y700 – Gaming laptop under $1000

The Lenovo Y700 is another good mid-range gaming laptop for civil engineering which prices around $1000 and provides a reasonably good value for its money.

It comes with a 15.6-inch full HD display that unfortunately does not have a very good color accuracy. It’s just ok for daily tasks and won’t be suitable for those who are too picky about the color reproduction.

The JBL speakers on this laptop are outstanding and that I have to say this is one of the most effective in the market currently. The laptop also offers a backlit keyboard that is often a good thing to have.

On the right side, you’ll find two USB 3.0, HDMI, and ethernet jack and you’ll get a USB 2.0 and a full-sized SD card slot on the left side of the laptop.

The battery life on this laptop is very poor in my opinion. You can get around 4-5 hours of battery life whereas doing easy and light-weight tasks and 1-1.5 hours while doing tasks that require high power.

  • Provides great value for money.

  • An affordable gaming laptop.

  • Great speakers.

Buyer’s Guide

Processor – A multi-core unit, we prefer an i5 or better yet, the i7 for any rendering or executing applications. Some appropriate processors right now are Intel’s Core i7-7300HQ, i7-7500U, i7-6700HQ, and i7-7700HQ processors.

RAM – 8 GB RAM, in our estimation, should be your primary level. Although most apps will run lower, this can offer you some extra capacity and can ensure that you’re set for later versions of those apps.

SSD Storage – Best case situation – you get a laptop with a big SSD which might be adequate for all of your engineering demands. However, large SSDs come at a big cost. So, I would suggest a smaller SSD (128/256 GB) rather than an HDD storage since SSDs are much faster and more sturdy than older HDD storage.

Graphics Card – We suggest grabbing an extra graphics card on your laptop. The most recent is Nvidia’s GTX series of laptop processors from the Pascal series. Right now, Nvidia’s GTX 1050 and 1060 get the most effective results for a moderate value. But if you want the best laptop for civil engineers – You need to go for Nvidia GTX 1070, GTX 1080, or an Nvidia Quadro graphics chip.

Display – In a complete world, I would recommend buying a larger display on your laptop. However, the most dilemma with this can be that larger display leads to create laptops somewhat bulkily. With this in thought, I advise the minimum of a 15-inch screen.

Battery Life – As a student or a civil engineer, you’ll be going places. This is wherever a laptop with a solid battery life shines. I feel most students would require a laptop that may last around eight hours easily.

Q1- Which screen size is perfect for the best laptops for civil engineering students?

A- It’s all about personal choice and work requirements. The large-size displays are better for civil engineers. However, 15.6 inches display is just right for every purpose. If you want to buy a portable laptop, then choose among 11-14 inches screens. The small screens are desirable for people who are much concerned about the laptop’s battery life. Moreover, go for the screen with full HD resolution because it will present visuals clear and bright.

Q2- Do the best laptops for civil engineers must have extra storage space?

A- It depends on your use. If you have lots of data and files to store on your laptop, additional storage will be required. Mostly the civil engineers need more storage space. They have to store lots of files and assignments while keeping backup of necessary work is also essential. So, a laptop with an extra slot for upgrading storage will be quite perfect.

Q3- What are the main specs that the best laptops for civil engineers must have?

A- The civil engineers should keenly check the specs of the laptop, catching their eyes. The laptop which supports configurations needed for engineering-related software, apps, and other programs will be highly preferable for engineers. The minimum required RAM is 4GB to 6GB. But select a laptop with more RAM if you have to deal with advanced programming.

Don’t choose the heavy laptop if you have to take it outdoors frequently. The display also matters a lot. A sharp and clear screen with full HD resolution is a must. The dedicated graphics card with higher VRAM will work well for all sorts of creations.

Q4- Do the civil engineers must go for touchscreen laptops?

A- The touchscreen laptop is more convenient to use. It allows faster navigation and brings ease to your work. Furthermore, if you are not comfortable with the touchscreen at times, you can use a mouse also. Most people select the touchscreen nowadays because they find it more comfortable to use. But the laptop with higher quality specs that lacks a touchscreen can also work perfectly for engineering tasks.

Q5- Which processor is required for the best laptops for civil engineers?

A- No doubt the processor is the main feature to focus on when buying a new laptop. The higher quality processor will be more functional for the best laptops for civil engineers. The Intel processor with at least 2.5GHz clock speed is what a laptop requires for technical work. If you are choosing an i7 processor, that’s a pretty good choice.
