7. Acer Aspire E 15- Cheapest Laptop for Civil Engineering Students
If you’re looking for a budget and the best laptop for civil engineering students, then you should definitely take a look at this Acer Aspire E15 because it prices cheaper and provides tons of features at just $600. I have talked about this laptop variety of times and that I have no reason not to recommend this superb laptop for a civil engineer.
The Acer Aspire E15 comes with a 15.6 inch full HD IPS display which has good color accuracy and viewing angles. The build quality of the laptop is just good I would say. Better build quality would have been appreciated but still, for a $600 machine, you’re a solid machine.
Currently, Acer is offering this laptop in various configurations. If you wish for the cheapest option, then I’ll suggest you get this one. This model comes with 256GB SSD, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Core i5-8250U Processor, and GeForce MX150 with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM.
As you can see, You’ve almost everything a civil engineer would need in a laptop. From storage to performance, this laptop has a lot to offer at a really cheap price.
If you’re curious about the gaming performance of this machine, then take a look at this laptop.
The MX150 performs reasonably well and considering the worth of this laptop, there’s nothing much to complain about. You should watch this video to know a lot about the gaming performance of this laptop.
Acer also has offered a good number of ports on this machine. The laptop offers two more special features i.e an optical drive and a backlit keyboard. You’ll notice many laptops with backlit keyboards these days but it’s pretty rare to see a laptop with an optical drive which might be handy sometimes.
When it comes to portability, the Acer Aspire E 15 weighs 5.3 lbs (2.4 kg) which might not be light-weight for many people. Hence, a bag to hold the laptop would be very helpful.
And lastly, the battery life.
Acer claims, the Aspire E15 will last up to 15 hours in a single but according to Mr. Turner, it’s safe to assume a 12-hour battery life on this machine that is still very impressive I’d say.
Overall, this is a damn good laptop for civil engineering students out there.
Note: If you wish for more laptops in the price category, then you should take a look at my post where I have shared the best cheap gaming laptops for under 500 dollars.
8. Lenovo Y700 – Gaming laptop under $1000
- 15.6 Full HD Display With 1920x1080p Resolution
- Intel Core i7 6th Gen 6700HQ Quad Core (2.60GHz Processor to 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost), Graphics Card GeForce GTX 960M With 4GB dedicated video memory

- 1 x HDMI 2 x USB 3.0 1 x USB 2.0, Windows 10 Home 64-
The Lenovo Y700 is another good mid-range gaming laptop for civil engineering which prices around $1000 and provides a reasonably good value for its money.
It comes with a 15.6-inch full HD display that unfortunately does not have a very good color accuracy. It’s just ok for daily tasks and won’t be suitable for those who are too picky about the color reproduction.
Lenovo has offered a 1TB 5400 rpm hard disk drive and 256GB SSD on this machine. You’ll install some of your important programs in the SSD drive and the rest of your personal information like multimedia or MS office files in the hard disk drive for good performance.
The 16GB DDR4 RAM is more than enough to perform your daily tasks, do your homework, consuming multimedia, all at once with no issues. The processor you’ll be getting on this machine is Intel Core i7-6700HQ that is slightly an older processor compared to the other two laptops but it does the job fine.
For gaming experience, Lenovo has delivered this laptop with GTX 960M that is again not the most powerful GPU but a good one that can handle many games with ease.
Note: I would suggest you get this Asus ROG Strix laptop If you’re looking for better gaming expertise because it comes with a better graphics card and provides more price than this laptop.
The JBL speakers on this laptop are outstanding and that I have to say this is one of the most effective in the market currently. The laptop also offers a backlit keyboard that is often a good thing to have.
On the right side, you’ll find two USB 3.0, HDMI, and ethernet jack and you’ll get a USB 2.0 and a full-sized SD card slot on the left side of the laptop.
The battery life on this laptop is very poor in my opinion. You can get around 4-5 hours of battery life whereas doing easy and light-weight tasks and 1-1.5 hours while doing tasks that require high power.
Buyer’s Guide
Processor – A multi-core unit, we prefer an i5 or better yet, the i7 for any rendering or executing applications. Some appropriate processors right now are Intel’s Core i7-7300HQ, i7-7500U, i7-6700HQ, and i7-7700HQ processors.
RAM – 8 GB RAM, in our estimation, should be your primary level. Although most apps will run lower, this can offer you some extra capacity and can ensure that you’re set for later versions of those apps.
SSD Storage – Best case situation – you get a laptop with a big SSD which might be adequate for all of your engineering demands. However, large SSDs come at a big cost. So, I would suggest a smaller SSD (128/256 GB) rather than an HDD storage since SSDs are much faster and more sturdy than older HDD storage.
Graphics Card – We suggest grabbing an extra graphics card on your laptop. The most recent is Nvidia’s GTX series of laptop processors from the Pascal series. Right now, Nvidia’s GTX 1050 and 1060 get the most effective results for a moderate value. But if you want the best laptop for civil engineers – You need to go for Nvidia GTX 1070, GTX 1080, or an Nvidia Quadro graphics chip.
Display – In a complete world, I would recommend buying a larger display on your laptop. However, the most dilemma with this can be that larger display leads to create laptops somewhat bulkily. With this in thought, I advise the minimum of a 15-inch screen.
Battery Life – As a student or a civil engineer, you’ll be going places. This is wherever a laptop with a solid battery life shines. I feel most students would require a laptop that may last around eight hours easily.
