The 11 Best Laptop For 3D Animation And Video Editing

I understand that you want to be able to smoothly transition between any scene with a frame rate of fps and render your scenes as quickly as feasible. As a result, you’re searching for the hardware that a top laptop for animation in 2022 ought to contain.

The fact is, there isn’t a single laptop that is ideal for animation.

What works best for you will depend on how intricate your scenes and models are, so it really is a matter of personal preference.

Example:

You’ll need to consider the most expensive and powerful laptops available if your scenes include high quality texture details, an incredible number of particles, 100 lights and shadows, or an excessive quantity of polygons and rigs. If not, you’ll have severe lagging and a viewport frame rate of only 15 frames per second.

Why You Need to Pay Attention

That kind of labour is not done by all animators. (If you are, don’t worry; we’ll also demonstrate something that will quickly pay for itself.)

Things You Need to Consider While Making a Purchase

Most sites just toss a bunch of expensive computers with overdone specs that weigh about 15 pounds into the mix without even mentioning what exactly animators can handle.

Additionally, I’ve come across websites with built-in GPUs for 3D animation software and/or expensive, old workstation machines for beginners.

Reddit and Quora, on the other hand, are always GREAT places to seek for hardware advice, in my opinion.

You should make sure you’re receiving the most value for your money even if they have precise hardware recommendations.

What Should You Look for in an Animation Laptop?

In this post, you’ll find two things:

  1. First, we’ll look at the top ten laptops for animation in 2022. These should be capable of running 3DS Max, Maya, and other 3D animation applications. We’ll also have a separate section for 2D animation laptops because the hardware requirements for 2D animators differ (much cheaper hardware).
  2. In the final portion ( which you can jump to using the TOC). We’ll go through every detail you need to know so you may seek for other options safely on your own, or if you just want to know how specific hardware affects animation software performance.

I’ll try to summarise the portion here before going over the 10 best laptops for animation. The complete section and explanations are at the bottom of this post.

Software

When I refer to 3D and 2D animation, I mean the following:

3D animation requires the use of visual effects software (VFX) or any 3D tool such as Maya, Blender, or 3DS Max (including 3D game design software).

2D animation is software that does not have a viewport. Pencil 2D and Adobe After Effects in 2D are two examples. Stop motion software is also available.

CPU

2D animation

Any recent Core i5 CPU (8th, 9th, 10th, 11th generation) or Ryzen 5 CPU (3rd,4th or 5th gen).

3D animation

9th, 10th, and 11th generation Core i7/Core i9 from the H series.

Core i7 11750H, Core i9 11800H, and so on.
H-series Ryzen 7/9 CPUs from the 4th or 5th generation.
Ex: Ryzen 7 5800H, Ryzen 9 5900HS.

When you would need a laptop for editing and animation

Editing and animation: choose the fastest clock speed you can afford (Ex: 5GHz as opposed to 4GHz).
When using a viewport, pay attention to the clock speed as well.
Rendering: As many cores as possible (Ryzen 9/Core i9 may have 8/10).

GPU

Animation in 2D

Any GPU will suffice. Those built-in cards that come standard are also acceptable. For example, the Intel HD/AMD Vega X series are suitable. Basically, as long as you obtain one of the CPUs I stated, you’ll be OK.

Animation in 3D

Let me just state that I’m sick of hearing people refer to NVIDIA GTX/RTX cards as “game cards.”

These GTX/RTX GPUs (for example, 1660Ti GTX or 3060RTX) are roughly equivalent (in most situations, better) than “workstation GPUs.”

The truth is that, for animation, the card with the most CUDA cores and “vRAM” wins.

If you hear someone go on and on about how “workstation cards” or “quadros” are the best option, that is an outmoded viewpoint.

Today’s high-tier 10th generation GTX Cards (1070GTX/1080GTX) and newer RTX series are sometimes superior to these “firepro/quadro” cards, particularly for GPU rendering (in Animation at least, they do become more useful in other applications).

Students should get a 1050Ti or an AMD equivalent (AMD Radeon RX 540/550/550/560). 4GB vRAM is sufficient for a buttery smooth viewport with light project loads and game development classes. However, the 1660Ti would be bulletproof.

Professionals:

10th generation identification cards NVIDIA GeForce Cards with plenty of vRAM (1660Ti,1070,1080/2060/2070/2080) or, better still, one of the latest RTX series (RTX 3050Ti, RTX 3060, RTX 3070, 3080). These will manage a large amount of rigs, polygons, particles, and so on with buttery smooth framerates.

I’ll also offer a nice NVIDIA Quadro for anyone who believe they may require it (they do become useful for a specific niche in animation)

RAM:

8GB RAM enough for people just beginning off with animation. When larger projects, such as maps, begin to arrive in your portfolio, you may always upgrade to 16GB RAM. All laptops may be upgraded.

16-32GB: larger devices require at least 16GB. 32GB is plenty for almost any application, including models with numerous details. 64GB of storage space may not be necessary.

Rendering is heavily reliant on RAM. However, anything larger than 32GB may be ineffective.

Display Resolution:

1080p is plenty for animation.

4k displays are excellent, especially if you are targeting 4k devices, but they are not required for such purposes.

Size:

Obviously, the larger the better because you’ll see larger frames and more details. 13″ can be difficult to work with, so avoid it unless you require portability.

About Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 is a first-rate corporate convertible, but its $2,457 price tag may be prohibitive for small businesses. Fortunately, Lenovo has released another 14-inch 2-in-1 for workplaces located outside of the enterprise: The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga Gen 2 (starts at $1,007.40; $1,197.99 as tested) is a slightly generic laptop with an old-school full HD (1,920-by-1,080-pixel) display—its aspect ratio is the familiar 16:9 rather than the slightly taller, newer 16:10—but it’s a capable performer with a handy onboard stylus. The ThinkBook isn’t the greatest convertible available, but saving $1,250 is appealing.

Nothing you don’t need, Every Thing You Need:

We gave the ThinkBook 14s Yoga an Editors’ Choice award in April 2021, but the stakes have risen since then. The Gen 2 model has a 12th Generation Intel Core processor—a Core i5-1235U in the $1,007.40 base model. Our $1,197.99 Staples configuration includes the same 16GB of RAM, 512GB NVMe solid-state drive, and 1080p touch screen but upgrades to a Core i7-1255U CPU (two Performance cores, eight Efficient cores, 12 threads).
